RCMP to Launch Blood Probe

Toronto Globe and Mail (12/22/97) P. A1
Picard, Andre

Abstract: Between 1980 and 1985, nearly 2,000 Canadians received HIV- infected blood and blood products, while an additional 60,000 transfusion recipients contracted hepatitis C between 1980 and 1990. Last month, the Commission of Inquiry on the Blood System in Canada issued an exhaustive report on the accidental infections, concluding that a significant number of them were preventable and could be tied to a series of institutional and individual failures. Following a number of formal and informal demands, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are now setting up an eight-member investigative team to determine whether criminal charges will be applied in the tainted-blood tragedy. The RCMP has also established a toll-free number to accept public tips. The decision to go public about the investigation is an attempt to dispute victims' allegations that a criminal investigation has been delayed because those most likely to be scrutinized are elected officials.
