Enzo Biochem Is Ready for Phase I Trial of HIV Gene Therapy

Reuters Health Information Services (12/19/97)

Abstract: Enzo Therapeutics has reportedly filed an Investigational New Drug application with the Food and Drug Administration to begin phase I testing of its StealthVector gene delivery system against HIV infection. The gene therapy approach was introduced earlier this year in a paper published in the May issue of Journal of Virology and uses a multitargeting strategy that prevents viral replication in the nucleus and the cytoplasm. In a Reuters interview, Cornell University's Jeffrey Laurence noted that Enzo's approach will be beneficial initially for two populations: HIV-positive people who have developed class resistance to sequential antivirals, and those who cannot comply with the complex drug regimens.
