AIDS-Infected Doctor Blasts Yale Over Appeal

Abstract: A doctor who sued the Yale School of Medicine after contracting HIV as an intern was awarded $12.2 million in compensatory damages on Wednesday. Yale's decision to appeal the verdict drew sharp criticism from the doctor--known as Jane Doe--who called the school's actions "reprehensible" and said she believes Yale hoped she "would die before this action ever came." William Doyle, a lawyer for Yale, denied the accusations and noted that the incident was an "unfortunate accident," but added that needlesticks happen frequently and are simply a risk associated with the job. Still, Doe's lawyer, Michael Koskoff, said the verdict sends a message to medical schools to prepare their students better for practicing medicine.
