UK Researchers Give Boost to TB Research

Reuters (12/17/97)

Abstract: In an effort that could aid researchers in the fight against tuberculosis, Dr. Bart Barrell of Britain's Wellcome Trust medical charity and Dr. Stewart Cole of France's Pasteur Institute announced Wednesday that they had completed reading the genetic map of the TB bacterium. Although Barrell and Cole note that the finding has not provided a cure, they believe it will offer basic information about the bacterium so that researchers can identify and develop every possible drug or vaccine that could be used against TB. With growing concerns about the symbiosis between TB and HIV, such information is particularly valuable. The trust now plans to sequence the genomes of other deadly diseases, such as malaria.
