Russian Church Attacks ... Sex Education

Reuters (12/16/97)
MacDonald, Alastair

Abstract: Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Alexiy II addressed a group of parish priests and lay officials this week on the immorality of the government's decision to spend $40 million to teach sex education in school. In the face of the growing threat of AIDS, the Russian government has been striving to increase low levels of sex education in schools, only to be constantly stonewalled by religious groups. According to Alexiy, the funds are being allocated at a time when Russia is faced with high levels of destitution.
