Tanzania AIDS Cases Number at Least 88,667

Abstract: By year-end 1996, the number of AIDS cases in Tanzania hit 88,667, according to a health ministry report, though experts estimate the actual number is much larger. According to a report by Tanzania's National AIDS Control Program that was obtained by Reuters, the Dar es Salaam region had the most cases in the nation, with the southern Mbeya and northern Kilimanjaro regions close behind. The number of HIV-infected adults in mainland Tanzania last year was put at about 1.35 million, based on blood donor data that showed 6.8 percent of males and 8.2 percent of females--out of a total adult population of 15.5 million--to be HIV infected.
