Abstract: New research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Johns Hopkins University shows that about 14 percent of sexually active people between the ages of 14 and 22 report not using any protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases the last time they had sex. The study--to be released today by the Alan Guttmacher Institute-- found that 37 percent of young women and 52 percent of young men used a condom to prevent pregnancy. An additional 8 percent of women and 7 percent of men said they used a condom in conjunction with another contraceptive, primarily to prevent transmission of STDs. Other data from Guttmacher and the Kaiser Family Foundation indicates that the average cost for pregnancy and STD care for each at-risk, unprotected teenager is $1,267 in the private sector and $677 in the public sector.
