Australia Targets Aborigines in Latest AIDS Fight

Abstract: Australia's indigenous population and gay men will be the focus of the country's anti-AIDS strategy for the next three years, health officials said Wednesday. "The vast majority of HIV infections in Australia remain among homosexually active men, although there is the potential for an emerging epidemic among aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people," said Health Minister Michael Wooldridge. Although the country's overall rate of HIV infection has dropped in recent years, the rate of diagnosis among indigenous people is increasing. Programs will advocate overall sexual health and focus on other sexually transmitted diseases.
