Suggestions for Clinical Nursing Research: Symptom Management in AIDS Patients

Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (07/93- 09/93) Vol. 4, No. 3, P. 13 (Zeller, Janice M.
Swanson, Barbara; Cohen, Felissa L.)

Malnutrition, respiratory dysfunction, gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms, and opportunistic infections are a few of the many sources of pain for AIDS patients. Nurses, like doctors, are responsible for trying to alleviate the multiple physical symptoms that accompany AIDS. As a reflection of the funding priorities of the National Institute of Nursing Research, the authors recommend that studies investigating and testing interventions of symptom relief become a priority in research programs of AIDS research nurses. Clinical significance of research may be measured not only by traditional outcomes like response to treatment and survival, but also by psychological outcomes, such as decreased anxiety. While they may single out specific symptoms for study, nurse researchers must remember the potential interaction of symptoms experienced by AIDS patients.
