"Malaysia Poised to Become World's Leading Condom Manufacturer"

United Press International (12/30/91)

Abstract: Kuala Lumpur--Malaysia may become the world's leading condom producer next year as a result of increased demand for prophylactics in Eastern Europe and the United States, manufacturers said today. As a response to the public's growing fear of contracting HIV, manufacturers say they expect to expand production by 2.5 million condoms in 1992. If the goal is reached, Malaysia could dominate a significant piece of the world market, according to Lim Beng Huat, general manager of Medilatex, a manufacturer producing 170 million comdoms a year. Lim said that Malaysia already has an advantage over Japan and South Korea because of its production of raw latex. He added, "Countries like Bulgaria, Hungary, and Yugoslavia in Eastern Europe and several republics in the former Soviet Union are opening their doors to trade with us and have indicated strong interest in importing our condoms."
