"AIDS Risk to Health Workers Low"

Abstract: A new study published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association reports that health-care workers are not becoming infected with HIV at unusually high rates, despite the risk inherent in their profession. By June of 1990, health-care workers made up 4.8 percent of the 137,385 Americans with AIDS, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Health-care workers have continually accounted for 5 percent or less of AIDS cases each year and are not overrepresented among people with AIDS. The CDC also said that 94 percent of the health-care workers who have AIDS had been involved in high-risk behavior unrelated to their profession.
