"AIDS Spells Disaster for Africa"

Los Angeles Times (12/28/91), P. A14
Hiltzik, Michael A.

Abstract: Even if population growth reverses in Africa, the increased number of deaths as a result of AIDS will spell further disaster for the continent, according to researchers who convened at the Sixth International Conference on AIDS in Africa earlier this month. New predictions suggest that AIDS is hitting the country's most productive group, people aged 15-49, at a disproportionately high rate. While demographics were used to estimate the impact and the possible costs of the epidemic, many variables, such as infection levels and the incubation period between infection and appearance of AIDS, could only be guessed. The World Health Organization estimates that 6 million Africans are HIV positive--60 percent of the global total. Unless a vaccine is found and there is widespread implementation of preventive practices, AIDS could decrease the population of high-prevalence areas, especially East Africa, by 50 percent within the next half century.
