Abstract: Health-care workers are not being infected with HIV at an unusually high rate, even though their profession carries some risks, according to a report in this week's Journal of The American Medical Association. Health-care workers comprise six percent of the U.S. labor force, but only 4.8 percent of the 137,385 people in the nation with AIDS are health-care workers, according to June 1990 figures from the Centers for Disease Control. In addition, 94 percent of health-care workers who did have AIDS had risk factors such as homosexual activity, intravenous drug use, or blood transfusions that were unrelated to their profession.
