"Dating Service Seeks to Heal Loneliness of HIV Infected"

Los Angeles Times (12/24/91), P. B1
Meyer, Josh

Abstract: A Los Angeles organization has implemented a dating service for people infected with HIV or AIDS. The group, Being Alive, sent out its first mailer to its confidential newsletter's 9,000 subscribers last week. Since then, the news of the dating service has become known among hundreds of people across the country who have written to Being Alive, and calls have overwhelmed the office's phone lines. Volunteer Warren Swil, who is reponsible for entering the names of clients into a computer, said, "It's wonderful. I didn't expect it to be this big so fast." The service, called Connect, is free and permits clients to search for friends and lovers without the fear of rejection. When the second newsletter is published in mid-January, the number of people who have submitted short biographies will increase about fourfold, estimates Swill. The biographies contain clients' background, sexual orientation, and interests.
