"A Magical Mystery Tour"

Newsweek (12/23/91) Vol. 118, No. 26, P. 59
Deford, Frank

Abstract: Magic Johnson has been regarded as a hero because of the way he is handling his bout with HIV infection, writes Frank Deford of Newsweek. Johson has taken the attitude that his infection was his fault, and claims that he prays more: "I ask God to give me more strength because I see he's got a mission for me, to help make society aware and to make society care." He once stressed safe sex, but now encourages more discretion from adults and abstinence to prevent HIV infection. Magic is also dispelling the rumours that he is a bisexual. He tested for negative for HIV in a 1988 insurance exam, which may mean it must have been transmitted to him from a woman who must have just contracted the virus. Many gays feel it is a double standard that Magic is not condemned for his sexual promiscuity or HIV infection, as they are. However, Magic may end up being their AIDS poster child, Deford concludes.
