"New AIDS Drug Poised to Move Into Development"

Science (12/20/91) Vol. 254, No. 5039, P. 1715
Hamilton, David P.

Abstract: A drug set aside last summer by its manufacturer, Hoffman-La Roche, is about to return to clinical trials. Hoffman-La Roche's final decision on a licensing partner for Ro 24-7429, the antiviral compund that uniquely attacks HIV, was immenent, according to insiders. The comany decided last May to discontinue developing Ro 24-7429, choosing instead to concentrate on two other promising antiviral drugs that are more completely developed. However, recent reports suggesting that HIV can rapidly develop resistance to many of the possible treatments have increased the need to find compuounds that use a different device. Before Hoffman-La Roche mothballed the drug, a continuing single clinical trial at the Johns Hopkins University to test the toxicity of Ro 24-7429 has so far found it to be safe. Federal AIDS officials are eager to discover if the drug will also be effective.
