"Mrs. Bush, Mending Bridges"

Washington Post (12/20/91), P. D1
Radcliffe, Donnie

Abstract: Barbara Bush yesterday attended the dedication of the Bill Austin Day Treatment and Care Center, a new center in Washington, D.C., that will provide day care to AIDS patients as a part of the Whitman-Walker Clinic. The center will offer outpatient programs providing medical care and psychological services. Mrs. Bush told a group of volunteers, professional caregivers, and people infected with HIV that the treatment center "will be a beacon of caring in our community for victims of this horrific disease" and that AIDS is "a tragedy that affects us all." Mrs. Bush said, "Most important, this will be a place where you can find a friend. Loneliness is often the toughest battle seriously ill people can face, especially people with AIDS.... I certainly make a pitch to all families to open your hearts and your minds and get educated about AIDS." John Maddix, an AIDS patient and a member of the clinic's board of directors, later said that, although Mrs. Bush was understanding, he was skeptical whether she would influence how President Bush views the disease.
