"Insurance Plays Role in Magic Johnson Status"

Journal of Commerce (12/19/91), P. 8A
Carter, Kelly

Abstract: Los Angeles Lakers General Manager Jerry West has announced that Magic Johnson will be removed from the team's injured list. Johnson was placed on the list under instructions from the league for insurance purposes, and will be placed on either a suspended list or a voluntary retirement list, giving the Lakers the option to replace him. The Lakers carried disability insurance on Johnson through Lloyds of London, but West would not divulge the details of the team's coverage. Terry Lyons, an NBA spokesman, speculated that Johnson, who tested positive for HIV six weeks ago, was placed on the injured list so that if he decided to play, reactivating him would be a simple matter. Neither the league office, the NBA Players Association, nor opponents who were interviewed said they were opposed to Johnson playing due to his medical condition. There have been no known cases of HIV transmission through sports, although cornermen in boxing wear protective gloves.
