"AIDS Risks in Black and White"

Wall Street Journal (12/17/91), P. A20
Bunzel, John H.

Abstract: Magic Johnson's statement that "we are all at risk" of contracting HIV is incomplete, writes researcher John H. Bunzel. The black and inner-city community is more at risk from the disease, and it is these people that Johnson must reach. AIDS, which used to be a homosexual disease, has now spread to the heterosexual community, where it is growing rapidly among inner-city minorities. While it is true that AIDS knows no color or gender bounderies, it is a fact that inner-city life places a person much more at risk of contracting the virus. Unfortunately, there is little indication that the black community is taking the epidemic as seriously as it should. "Where are Jesse Jackson, Benjamin Hooks, Bob Martinez, and the many other black and Hispanic leaders who speak out so forcefully on related issues like drugs, poverty, education, and public health?" asked Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page. While many, such as Johnson, may have the right message, Bunzel concludes, reaching the audience is a hurdle that may not be overcome.
