"AIDS: No Magic Cure"

Barron's (12/16/91) Vol. 71, No. 50, P. 10
Savitz, Eric J.

Abstract: Recently, Merck + Co. announced that it would discontine research on a potential AIDS drug because it was found to become ineffective after six to 12 weeks. Merck's decision followed the discover that HIV quickly develop resistance to the compound, which may mean that the virus will produce the same reaction to all of the potential drugs known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors. The murky future seen by scientists and researchers working in the lab contrasts with how Wall Street views it. On Wall Street, many have celebrated what they consider "cures." Few, if any, of the alleged "cures" are effective. However, researchers hope that a new group of drugs known as protease inhibitors will be successful in prohibiting HIV from producing enzyme protease. If enzyme protease is inhibited, the reproduction process diverts, developing distorted viruses which will not harm the immune system.
