Abstract: Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer is stubbornly supporting mandatory AIDS testing of all state health care workers, despite almost unanimous expert testimony that the plan would be expensive and foolish, write the editors of the Baltimore Sun. Both of the governor's AIDS task forces have told him that mandatory testing would make no sense, yet Schaefer has maintained that the widely publicized case of Kimberly Bergalis' infection by her dentist--the only case of health-care-worker-to-patient transmission recorded so far--necessitates a program of mandatory testing. The governor's second AIDS task force, which was hand-picked after Schaefer fired the first panel because he disagreed with their findings, has recommended a more sensible plan of instituting OSHA guidelines for HIV protection in the workplace and beefing up AIDS education for health care workers and their patients.
