"Underground Press Leads Way on AIDS Advice"

New York Times (12/16/91), P. A16
Bishop, Katherine

Abstract: Underground AIDS newsletters have evolved as the most informative source of information on the disease and have helped bring about radical changes in the United States' health-care system. The newsletters help people with AIDS stay on top of what is happening in research and medicine. Doctors and researchers have confessed to also using the newsletters for information that they cannot find in official publications. The most frequently used newsletter by advocotes for people with AIDS, and by doctors and researchers in the field, is AIDS Treatment News, which is issued every two weeks in San Francisco. John S. James, publisher of the newsletter, said, "We deal with things nobody is promoting because they are not approved yet. People buy the newsletter because they are interested in saving their lives." The newsletters have worked together with political organizations like ACT-UP, and have been cited for significantly contributing to getting drugs released quickly, or at a lower cost, because they publicize and support demonstrations aimed at doing so.
