"Soviet Weekly Predicts 20 Million AIDS Infections by the Year 2000"

Washington Times (04/26/90), P. A3
Price, Joyce

Abstract: The weekly Soviet magazine Ogonyok, as part of an AIDS information campaign, has predicted 20 million Soviets with HIV infections by the year 2000 caused by shortages of condoms and hypodermic needles. Paul Sato, a physician and medical epidemiologist with the World Health Organization, has called the prediction "a little high," but "that doesn't mean the forecast is unreasonable." Sato agrees that potential for HIV infection is large in the Soviet Union. Murray Feshback, Georgetown University professor and expert on Soviet health issues, disagrees with the Soviet predictions. He disbelieves the official figures and predicts 200,000 Soviets with HIV by the year 2000. The editors of Ogonyok claim their apocalyptic forecast is based on the fact that the Soviet medical establishment contributes to the epidemic. They have appealed for cash donations and medical supplies from abroad to help prevent an HIV exposion in the U.S.S.R.
