"No Evidence for HIV-2 Infection in Uganda"

Lancet (12/15/90) Vol. 336, No. 8729, P. 1514
Downing, Robert G., and Biryahwaho, Benon

Abstract: Serum samples from 40 sites across Uganda, as well as from the Rakai District, show no evidence of HIV-2 infection despite the high risk of acquiring HIV-1, write Robert Downing and Benon Biryahwaho of the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe. Slim" disease, the manifestation of AIDS in Uganda caused by HIV-1, began appearing in the Rakai district in 1982, so HIV-2 might also have appeared, given its prevalence in West and Central Africa. Although some samples reacted for HIV-2 antibodies by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), Western blot showed none were positive. A study of 2,000 randomly selected blood samples in 1987 also yielded no evidence of HIV-2 infection in Uganda, the researchers write, confirming the divergent natural histories of the two retroviruses.
