"HIV Infection: Haemophiliacs Win Compensation"

Nature (12/20-27/90) Vol. 348, No. 6303, P. 667
Aldhous, Peter

Abstract: U.K. Prime Minister John Major recently announced that HIV-infected hemophiliacs would receive a further $42 million pounds as settlement of their negligence suit against the National Health Service. The Haemophilia Society welcomed the settlement as a tacit admission of legal responsibility, because the government had supplied the imported factor VIII that infected 1,200 British hemophiliacs with HIV. However, David Watters, general secretary of the Hemophilia Society, said the settlement was disappointingly short of the $100 million pounds the group sought. Most of the hemophiliacs involved in the suit are expected to accept the compensation, which averages $35,000 pounds each, and drop the suit. In the United States, negligence suits are not expected to fare as well, because the suits were filed against individual companies and most hemophiliacs use clotting factor produced by several different sources.
