"AIDS and the Danger of Complacency"

Baltimore Sun (12/28/90), P. 15A
Power, Jonathan

Abstract: There's a dangerous loss of momentum in the AIDS battle caused by complacency, writes Jonathan Power in the Baltimore Sun. AIDS is getting less press coverage and less money, as critics have charged that the disease gets a disproportionate share of funds. This dangerous lull in the battle is troubling, he writes, because of the many areas of the world that have not yet been touched by AIDS but are vulnerable. The warning signs are there in India and China, in reports of HIV infections among prostitutes and IV drug users. In addition, sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise worldwide. Money spent on AIDS is absolutely necessary, writes Powers, to keep our guard up, fortify scarce health care resources in developing countries, and ensure that AIDS prevention messages get to those who are at risk. Lord Shaftesbury said 150 years ago that private well-being depends on public health. AIDS resources must be allotted in accordance with this philosophy, he concludes: to develop and expand public health outreach to at-risk groups in third world countries and poor minorities here.
