"Artist Wants Mural to Comfort AIDS Patients"

Washington Post (12/27/90), P. DC1
Portner, Jessica

Abstract: After Washington, D.C.,-area resident Victoria Russell, a 36-year-old graphic designer, joined a candlelight vigil for AIDS patients outside the White House in October 1989, she decided she wanted to recapture the energy of the thousands who gathered to show support and push for a nationwide effort against AIDS. She painted a 28-by-11-foot mural in magenta and blues that she hopes captures the spirit of the evening. Russell's work will hang in the basement of the Whitman-Walker Clinic for AIDS patients. Russell hopes the mural, with its image of solidarity, will comfort those who gather in the basement for HIV testing, a procedure that causes great anxiety for those who undergo it. She hopes the mural will reassure patients that the community cares about them, and perhaps spur others to action in the fight against AIDS.
