"Side Effects are Danger in Doctors with AIDS"

Abstract: The greatest risk to a patient posed by a physician with HIV is not virus transmission but cognitive impairment and emotional problems caused by the disease, writes Dr. Mark Klein of Berkeley, Calif., in a letter to the New York Times. In response to "Doctor's AIDS Death Renews Debate on Who Should Know," (12/8, P. A1), Klein writes that neurological and emotional problems stemming from a terminal illness and secondary infections dangerous to immunosuppressed people are the major hazards faced by patients of doctors with HIV. Klein predicts a wave of litigation because of patient injuries resulting from health-care workers' conealed HIV infections.
