"Heterosexual Transmission of HIV-1 in Women in Austria"

Lancet (12/15/90) Vol. 336, No. 8729, P. 1514
Piribauer, Franz, and Zangerle, Robert

Abstract: Heterosexual transmission of HIV is increasing slowly but steadily in Austria, particularly among women, report Franz Piribauer and Robert Zangerle of Osterreichische AIDs-Hilfe (OeAH), and University of Innsbruck, Austria. Nearly 5 percent of new clients seeking HIV tests at OeAH anonymous testing clinics were positive for HIV between July 1987 and July 1990. There was a significant increase in heterosexual HIV transmission among female clients due to sexual contact with HIV positives (30 percent), sex with a high-risk partner (usually an IV drug user--33 percent), or multiple sex partners (30 percent). Although these data may not represent the entire population, they indicate a distinct trend: IV drug use and HIV infection supports the spread of HIV among heterosexuals, they conclude.
