"1990 Sees Advance Against AIDS"

Reuter (12/21/90)

Abstract: Scientists failed to find a cure for AIDS in 1990, but they did see a drop in AIDS cases among homosexual men, found effective AIDS vaccines for monkeys and chimps, and saw the development of a number of new drugs. "There is still an upbeat tone," said chief of federal AIDS vaccine research Dr. Wayne Koff. Scientists have developed six vaccines to prevent the virus along with six other vaccines designed to retard the virus in those already infected. A new AIDS drug, ddI, is being used experimentally by 15,000 people, and its manufacturers, Bristow-Myers Squibb may seek FDA apporval in 1991. Despite the good new, AIDS has continued its rampant infection in Africa, where about 5 million people now carry the virus. The number of AIDS cases among heterosexual men in the U.S. is also increasing, with 2,667 new cases reported.
