"Zambia Maintains Sense of Perspective over AIDS"

Financial Times (12/24/90), P. 3
Hall, Mike

Abstract: AIDS is a big topic in Zambia, as government and voluntary groups work to eradicate HIV in an atmosphere of changing attitudes and greater openness. On World AIDS Day, the Ministry of Health publicized safe sex messages in posters, on radio and television, and in condom giveaways, highlighting a major shift in government, and thus public, openness in the last three years. Although some say other disastrous but preventable diseases affecting Africa, such as malnutrition, tropical diseases, and diarrhea, are more threatening than AIDS, most agree that Zambia faces a crisis. Government groups are working with volunteers all over the country to find innovative educational and coping strategies, with counselling services, widespread blood screening, health education in schools, anti-AIDS clubs, and outreach for prostitutes in townships. Official statistics show 3,155 AIDS cases and 12,815 people infected with HIV, but the figures are grossly underreported. The epidemic is already placing a severe strain on health and social services and contributing to the breakdown of the family.
