"World Wire: Growing Threat to World Health"

Wall Street Journal (12/21/90), P. A8
Mathewson, William

Abstract: The World Health Organization (WHO) said sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, are epidemic in developed and developing countries around the world. Andre Meheus, chief medical officer of the WHO Program of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, said 250 million or more infections with syphilis, genital herpes, gonorrhea, and HIV occur annually and the number is increasing. Ease of transmission, lack of cures or vaccines, and the difficulty of changing people's sexual practices make prevention difficult, he said.
