Abstract: Requests from homeless people for food and emergency shelter have risen by an average of 24 percent in 30 major cities in the last year, the U.S. Conference of Mayors reported yesterday. Requests for emergency food aid rose 22 percent as the economy slumped, the report said. The mayors' survey found that 80 percent of cities experienced a rise in requests for shelter and all but a handful registered increased requests for food. Looking at the composition of homeless populations, the report indicated that 28 percent are mentally ill, 38 percent use drugs or alcohol, and 6 percent have HIV or AIDS.
