"Transmission of HIV by Transfusion of Screened Blood"

New England Journal of Medicine (12/13/90) Vol. 323, No. 24, P. 1709
Donahue, James G., et al.

Abstract: Based on a single HIV infection out of 4163 cardiac patients in Baltimore and Houston who received 36,282 pints of donated blood, James Donahue and colleagues of Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health write, they previously reported the risk of HIV infection from tranfusion was 1 in 36,282. However, with the report of an additonal case of HIV infection, the estimate has been revised to 2 in 80,630. Although donor screening and blood testing have made the blood supply vastly safer, the epidemic has spread into groups who do not perceive themselves as at-risk, continue to donate blood, and elude detection by screening procedures. For additional safety of the blood supply, identification of these donors is needed, Donahue and colleagues write.
