"AIDS-Related Claims Rose 37.7 Percent in 1989, Study Shows"

Journal of Commerce (12/19/90), P. 9A
Goldberg, Jerry

Abstract: AIDS-related insurance claims in the individual and group markets rose to $1.1 billion in 1989, a 37.7 percent increase over 1988, according to a survey of 548 insurers conducted by A.M. Best Co. One half (53.4 percent) of all life and health insurance claims were made by HIV-positive individuals in California, New York, and Texas, doubling the percentage of total claims from HIV patients in two years. The report said the vast majority of insurers, particulary of medium to large companies, have experienced some HIV-related claims due to a progressive rise in HIV incidences. AIDS-related costs as a percentage of total claims also rose, accounting for 2.5 percent of all life insurance claims.
