"Study Casts a Shadow on New Virus-Fighting Drugs"

Abstract: Washington--Genetically-engineered receptor proteins of the CD4 receptor, which HIV uses to dock onto immune system cells, may not be a promising avenue for AIDS therapy, researchers from Columbia University said yesterday. Studies with polio indicate virus mutants can evade decoy receptors--boding ill for scientists who hoped soluble CD4 attached to toxins would provide a valuable AIDS therapy, Geraldo Kaplan and colleagues report in the current issue of Science. In the test tube, reduced binding to receptors did not inhibit viral replication in any significant way, the researchers write.
