"AIDS Conference Planned"

United Press International (12/26/89)

Abstract: Planners of an upcoming AIDS conference entitled "Moving Forward: AIDS and the Church, Where Faith and Healing Meet," hope to dispell the idea promoted by some televalgelists and fundementalists that AIDS is a punishment from God. Rev. Howard Warren Jr., director of pastoral services at the Indianapolis-based Damien Center, the non-profit support and educational agency hosting the conference, said that many people believe televangelists' pronouncements about AIDS, resulting in arejection of patients and their families. Warren said that ignorance is to blame for much of the spread of the deadly disease, and he believes that "until people get beyond the stigma, we are facing an epidemic."
