"AIDS Activists Walk Out on Christmas Mass"

United Press International (12/25/89)
Hormell, Sharon

Abstract: Eleven AIDS activists staged a silent protest during a Christmas midnight mass at a Roman Catholic cathedral in Los Angeles, walking out of the service as Archbishop Roger Mahoney delivered his sermon. Shortly after the midnight mass began, the11 demonstrators, protesting the church's rejection of the use ofcondoms to prevent acquired immune deficiency syndrome, paired off, and joined hands held high, walked to the front of the church before leaving the cathedral. About 100 demonstrators from the AIDS activist group ACT UP, as well as two abortion pro-choice groups had chanted and handed flyers to parishioners as they entered the church. Archbishop Mahoney chaired the National Conference of Catholic bishops, which recently drafted the policy statement that rejected the use of condoms as a means of fighting the spread of the disease. He told the bishops that young people should avoid "being trapped into the 'safe sex' myth, which is both a lie and a fraud." Related Story: NYT (12/26/89) P. A20
