"Future Mayor Condemned for AIDS-Phobic Remark"

Gay Community News (12/23/89) Vol. 17, No. 23, P. 2
Briggs,

Abstract: The mayor-elect of Salem, Mass., Neil J. Harrington, drew the wrath of AIDS activists and health officials for his remarks during a city council meeting Dec. 4. During discussion on whether to fund a part-time clerk in the health department to staff a tuberculosis clinic, Harrington learned that tuberculosiscases are on the rise because of the increase in AIDS cases. Themayor-elect expressed the priority he gives to AIDS funding when he commented, "If you have AIDS, your going to die anyways." Former U.S. General C. Everett Koop, who happened to be speaking in Salem three days later, condemned Harrington's remark. "I'm not going to say anything about the mayor except to say one simple thing," Koop said. "AIDS is an incurable disease. But while you cannot cure, you can still care....I would be very muchin favor of the strong effort to support those who are dying of AIDS."
