"More Zaire AIDS Cases Show Less Underreporting"

New York Times (12/22/89), P. A9
Noble, Kenneth B.

Abstract: In Zaire, a one-month jump in reported AIDS cases from 335 to 4,636 represents not an exponential increase in the numberof people with the disease, but a new willingness to treat AIDS as any other public-health menace, American and European researchers say. For the two years preceding the October 1989 report, the African nation had barely changed the number of casesit reported. Many sub-Saharan African nations are sensitive about reporting cases, especially since researchers speculated that the virus originated in central Africa. Although officials in Zaire gave no reason for the jump in reported cases, one senior health official said, "There are a lot of political factors that go into these figures." Despite Zaire's delay in reporting, scientists say the nation has been a leader in Africa in AIDS research and education. The HIV research project at Kinshasa's Mama Yemo hospital is the continent's largest. Healthexperts say increased reporting will heighten worldwide awarenessof the magnitude of the problem in Africa.
