"San Antonio to Open First Licensed Home for Children with AIDS"

United Press International (12/18/89)
Haines, Rebecca

Abstract: San Antonio--Officials said Monday that San Antonio will open its first licensed foster care home for children with HIV/AIDS this spring. The Sisters of Divine Providence, a local order of Roman Catholic nuns, will operate the home, which is scheduled to open March 1. Pediatricians from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will provide medical care to the children at the home, which will accomodate as many as six children. The residence will also serve as a training center for foster parents in San Antonio. Forty-eight children under 18 in South Texas have AIDS or are infected with HIV. That number is expected to exceed 400 within the next four or five years because of "vertical transmission," said Sister Imelda Gonzalez, who said, "They're being born with the virus from the mother, and the mother is usually infected by the father." Gonzalez said many of these children are born to parents who cannot care for them, and many foster parents will not accept HIV-positive children.
