"Student with AIDS Tells Classmates During Show-and-Tell"

Abstract: Atlanta--For show-and-tell, third-grader Brett Lykins told his Chattahoochee Elementary classmates he has AIDS. Parents and students knew a child at the school had AIDS, but Brett's identity had been kept secret from all but the school's principal and his teacher. "I just went up and said I was the one," he said. "It's been hard to keep this secret. I decided not to keep it anymore." After show-and-tell, Brett's teacher, Nancy Terry, gave a health lesson on AIDS. Brett said his classmates responded well, one offering prayers and another a small doll. "I don't want [the kids] to give me a lot of stuff," he said. "I just want them to know." Brett contracted HIV from a blood transfusion after his premature birth.
