"Absence of Effect of Zidovudine on Replication of Hepatitis B Virus in" Patients with Chronic HIV and HBV Infection

New England Journal of Medicine (12/21/89) Vol. 321, No. 25, P. 1758
Marcellin, Patrick, et al.

Abstract: AZT used alone appears to have no therapeutic value in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, write Patrick Marcellin and fellow researchers at Hopital Beaujon, Clichy, France. The researchers report on a study of 15 men with HIV-1 and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection who had been taking AZT for a mean period of 39 weeks at the time of analysis. The results of the study suggest that AZT in doses of 600 mg to 1200 mg has no significant effect on the serum levels of HBV DNA in patients with chronic HIV and HBV infections. Because most of the patients had AIDS or ARC, the researchers say, they can't rule out an inhibitory effect of AZT on HBV replication in asymptomatic anti-HIV-positive or anti-HIV-negative subjects. In addition, Marcellin and colleagues point out, AZT in association with alpha interferon or another anti-viral compound might have a synergistic effect on HBV.
