New Haven--Researchers at Yale University say they have developed a new technique that could lead to the creation of powerful vaccines against AIDS and other communicable diseases. Ira Mellman of the school's School of Medicine said the researchers spent three years developing an efficient way to develop antibody-AUtobodies, which zero in on common parts of two classes of viruses, alpha-class and flavi-type. The common denominators should make it possible to develop tests, treatments, and vaccines that work against all the viruses in the two classes, Mellman said. The researcher said an application for a patent is in process. Med-Venture of Minneapolis has received a license for the process and is negotiating with a major pharmaceutical company to test and possibly market it, Mellman said.
