Abstract: A recent Los Angeles County order requiring closure for any bathhouse in which oral or anal sex was taking place was supported by a recent decision by the California Supreme Court. That body refused to hear an appeal brought by a gay Los Angeles bathhouse affected by the order, which officials issued under a new county policy that replaced an earlier policy prohibiting anal or oral sex without condoms in bathhouses. County officials said they had hoped the condom order would cut down on bathhouses' appeal, but an undercover investigation at Mac's bathhouse discovered many violations. The bathhouse appealed, arguing that shutting down bathhouses would not halt the spread of AIDS, and in fact, might help the disease to spread, as bathhouse sexual activity is safer than that in the general population. There are still 10 bathhouses operating in the county, and officials say they are making efforts to abide by the rules.
