"'Wings' Funds for Women with AIDS"

Bay Area Reporter (12/22/88) Vol. 18, No. 51, P. 29
Newquist, Jay

Abstract: An early December benefit concert called Wings of Shelter will help San Francisco's Shanti Project to open a residence for women with AIDS. Two other area groups will also benefit from the concert. Chris Williamson with Tret Fure and several other acts performed at the benefit, and Oakland Mayor Lionel Wilson declared Dec. 6 Wings of Shelter Day. Shanti, which now maintains 12 independent, cooperative living homes for people with AIDS and ARC in the San Francisco area, is now readying a shelter solely for women. The shelter is part of the group's effort to reach women and minorities with its services. The director of Shanti's residence program, Ellie CousineAU, said, "We see our women's residential home providing essentially the same type of home support as our established programs, but providing a safe environment option for women facing AIDS to support each other." Shanti is also considering a new family housing program for people with AIDS who have dependent children. The Bay Area has about 100 women with AIDS and an estimated 1000 with ARC, Wings of Shelter says.
