Abstract: With parents frightened about AIDS, parents who came of age in the 1960s and 70s are counseling their children to be more cAUtious about sex than they were as adolescents. However, parents also worry that their newfound conservatism will alienate them from their children. One mother, who says she feels "like I'm more of a lecturer than a participant in a dialogue" when she talks to her son, remembered, "As teen-agers, we could get away with a certain amount of experimentation." However, she says, "The dangers of experimenting now are much greater." Psychologists say that, despite their behavior, children do listen to information from parents. Dr. Pieter Leroux of the University of Rochester's Family and Marriage Clinic, says that to get across their message, parents should be "calm and accepting" rather than "tense, anxious, or rejecting" when discussing sex. Debra Haffner, executive director of the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States, warns parents not to minimize treat their children's first loves "as inconsequential."
