Abstract: New Jersey's State Department of Education has issued a report saying its high school students are ignorant about AIDS despite the efforts of public school educators and administrators. In a survey based on interviews with students in 15 school districts earlier this year, the department found that 59 percent of the students thought one could be infected with HIV from mosquito bites or were not sure. Another 40 percent had the same unfounded doubts about toilet seats. Of the 2300 students questioned, fewer than half said they would attend school with a person with AIDS or believed that such a person had a right to attend school. Sixty-nine percent of New Jersey school districts are teaching about AIDS, a related survey found. Of those districts, 21 percent involve parents and other community members in the preparation of curriculum.
