Abstract: Rahway, N.J.--Recombinant DNA expert Dr. Irving Sigal, who spearheaded a major effort to discover new AIDS drugs, died on Pan Am Flight 103 when it crashed Dec. 31. Sigal, 35, was senior director of Molecular Biology at Merck Sharp + Dohme Research Laboratories. He was returning from a lecture at the Royal Biochemical Society in London at the time of his death. Sigal was internationally known for his landmark work on site-directed mutagenesis, or manipulating DNA to learn how its proteins and enzymes function.
