"Church Both Friend and Foe to Eastern European Gays"
Washington Blade (12/23/88) Vol. 19, No. 52, P. 11
Anderson, Shelley
A Vienna, AUstria, gay organization, Homosexuelle Initiative (HOSI), has been the best source of news about the gay rights movement--including information having to do with AIDS--in Eastern bloc countries. In Poland, where most gays are closeted and the Roman Catholic church condemns homosexuality, HOSI reports that media reports on AIDS have nonetheless been fairly objective. In East Germany, where Protestant churches have supported gay rights groups, one secular organization, the Sonntagsclub, took shape in 1987. The group, made up of teachers and students at Berlin's Humboldt University, works closely on anti-AIDS efforts with the government and with the university's Work Group on AIDS. Homeros Lambda, in Hungary, is an officially recognized group that prints brochures on AIDS and plans to begin support groups for HIV-positive people and organize volunteer efforts. In Yugoslavia, official protests led to the cancelation of a gay festival. One newspaper claimed the festival would spread AIDS.
